A Pair of New Exhibits at Gallery 16 This Weekend! - SOMA ...

Gallery 16 (501 Third St.) is set to open yet another exhibition by Rex Ray tomorrow evening from 6:00 p.m. ? 9:00 p.m.

Gallery 16 is excited to present its seventh exhibition with San Francisco artist Rex Ray. The exhibition will feature new paintings and collage. Ray?s work has become a fixture in the national contemporary art scene with its unmistakable graphic power.

Ray?s unique sensibility straddles both the world of Fine Art and Graphic Design. His paintings and collage have received acclaim in national and international art venues, and his ubiquitous graphic work has made him a staple on the international design scene. His biomorphic shapes pull from a 1950?s aesthetic while grounded in an expressionistic lineage, resulting in lush, playfully sophisticated abstract compositions.

Over the years Rex has created product lines that have included everything from unique wallpapers and textiles to I-pad cases. This fall, Gallery 16 and Rickshaw Messenger Bags are teaming up to create an original Rex Ray series. The unique bags will be used to raise money to benefit the work of Visual Aid. Founded in 1989, Visual Aid assists artists whose careers are challenged due to life- threatening illness.

Ray?s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions worldwide including The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, University Art Museum in Berkeley, San Jose Museum of Modern Art, The Crocker Museum in Sacramento, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions.

While you?re there, you can also check out a new photogravure edition from artist, Ari Marcopoulos; also opening on Friday.

Ari began his career in New York where is assisted Andy Warhol. Since then he has documented the diverse subcultures of American youth. His photographs and videos document the immediacy of underground music, art and the rebelliousness of youth, including that of his own sons. His straightforward portraits and lush snapshots capture arresting, unsentimental moments of beauty and anxiety.

The new photogravure edition combines elements of his own history, using iconic images of Warhol?s Marilyn Monroe portrait, and his more recent photographs of graffiti. For years Marcopoulos worked with Xerox machines as a medium to create his photographic prints. In these compositions he uses several of his photographs to make multi-pass Xerox prints, resulting in new compositions born out of chance. Using the Intaglio process, we elevate the simple and direct beauty of the low-fi Xerox technique through the lavish tradition of Photogravure. The edition will be presented from September 9th to October 30th at Gallery 16.
