fMRIs show that dyslexia isn't a matter of IQ

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2011) ? About 5 to 10 percent of American children are diagnosed as dyslexic. Historically, the label has been assigned to kids who are bright, even verbally articulate, but who struggle with reading -- in short, whose high IQs mismatch their low reading scores. When children are not as bright, however, their reading troubles have been chalked up to their general intellectual limitations.

Now a new brain-imaging study challenges this understanding of dyslexia. "We found that children who are poor readers have the same brain difficulty in processing the sounds of language whether they have a high or low IQ," says Massachusetts Institute of Technology neuroscientist John D. E. Gabrieli, who worked on the study with Fumiko Hoeft, Hiroko Tanaka, Jessica M. Black, Leanne M. Stanley, Shelli R. Kesler, and Allan L. Reiss of the Stanford University School of Medicine; Charles Hulme at York University in the UK; and Susan Whitfield-Gabrieli, also at MIT. "Reading difficulty is independent of other cognitive abilities."

The findings, which will be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science, could change the ways educators help all poor readers.

The study involved 131 children, about 7 to 17 years old. According to a simple reading test and an IQ measure, each child was assigned to one of three groups -- typical readers with typical IQs; poor readers with typical IQs; and poor readers with low IQs. All were shown word pairs and asked whether they rhymed. Spellings didn't indicate sound similarities. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, the researchers observed the activity in six brain regions important in connecting print and sound.

The results: Poor readers in both IQ groups showed significantly less brain activity in the observed areas than typical readers. But there was no difference in the brains of the poor readers, regardless of their IQs. "These findings suggest the specific reading problem is the same whether or not you have strong cognitive abilities across the board," says Gabrieli.

The study could have an important impact on both the diagnosis and education of poor readers. The revised definition of dyslexia proposed for the upcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V), psychiatry's diagnostic bible, "currently lacks neurobiological evidence for the removal of 'severe discrepancy' [between IQ and reading ability]," says Stanford's Fumiko Hoeft. "Our study will be the first to provide such evidence."

Meanwhile, educators commonly offer reading- and language-focused interventions to bright dyslexics, to bring their reading up to the level of their expected achievement. But they may consider such specific remediation futile for less-"smart" children. If teachers understand that the same thing is going on in the brains of all poor readers, they may see that all those children could benefit from the same interventions. Since it's hard to learn much if you can't read, that's good news for a lot of kids.

Amazon pushes Barnes & Noble's back to the wall (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Amazon.com Inc's aggressive pricing on its Kindle devices leaves Barnes & Noble Inc little choice but to match the online retailer and update its own devices, even if that means more damage to the bookstore chain's bottom line.

Amazon introduced its long expected Kindle Fire tablet on Wednesday, as well as a touchscreen device and a cheaper version of its basic Kindle e-reader.

Those items are less expensive than their counterparts in Barnes & Noble's series of Nook devices and have the added benefit of giving consumers access to Amazon's cloud computing and entertainment services.

Barnes & Noble shares closed down 6.8 percent after falling as much as 13.3 percent earlier.

"It hurts them a lot more than it does Apple because they're so reliant on the Nook," said Michael Souers, an analyst with S&P Equity Research, forecasting lower Nook prices. "They need to maintain market share, which means their profitability is going to decline."

Barnes & Noble, which is facing an industry-wide decline in book sales, has gotten some relief from its Nook, launched in 2009 about two years after the first Kindle came on the market.

Last month, Barnes & Noble forecast sales of its Nook devices and e-books would double this year and reach $1.8 billion, or nearly a quarter of its revenue, even as its same-store sales stagnate.

Forrester Research estimates Barnes & Noble has a fifth of the e-book and e-reader market, compared with Amazon's 60 percent.

Barnes & Noble, which forecast a loss for the current fiscal year, suspended its dividend in February to hoard more money to invest in Nook.

It has so far proven a feisty challenger. It got the Nook Color to market a year before Amazon's Fire and a touchscreen version was introduced in May.

The Kindle Fire costs $199, compared with the Nook Color's $249. Amazon also lowered the price on its basic Kindle to $79, including ads. That compares with $139 for the basic Nook.

With the holidays nearing, the pressure is on. The bookseller must also contend with Amazon's ability to bundle its Kindles with other services, such as its cloud music storage and movie streaming, McQuivey said.

"It just means that Barnes & Noble has no time to really rest because on every single product front they have to respond," said Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey. "Barnes & Noble cannot offer all this media experience."

But Janney Capital Markets analyst David Strasser said he expected "a major product refresh" given that Nook Color is a year old now.

"They're going to need faster hardware for sure. The Nook is a reasonably good performing device, but it's certainly not something you'd call quick," Tim Stevens, editor in chief of technology blog Endgadget, told Reuters at the Amazon launch in New York. "And there is no access to a broad Android market like there is here."

Others say the game may still be too early to call.

"We are in the fairly early innings of the e-reader and digital transformation," said Morningtar's Peter Wahlstrom.

Revolabs FLX(TM) Wireless Conference Phone Now Available in ...

Revolabs FLX(TM) Brings Superior Sound Quality and Innovative Design for Small- to Midsized Conference Rooms, Executive Offices, and SoHo Environments

SUDBURY, Mass. ? Sept. 26, 2011 ? Revolabs Inc. today announced that its Revolabs FLX(TM) wireless conference phone is now available to the European, Hong Kong, and Australian markets. Designed specifically for small- to midsized conference rooms, executive offices, and small office/home office (SoHo) environments, FLX is based on Revolabs? wireless audio technology that for years has delivered superior sound quality for audio and video conferencing to large conference rooms and boardrooms. With FLX, Revolabs brings this exceptional performance to smaller settings at a competitive price point.

?The FLX has already made a huge impact in the North American market, and we are pleased that we can now offer this evolutionary leap in conferencing speakerphones to our customers in Europe, Hong Kong, and Australia,? said JP Carney, Revolabs chief operating officer. ?For companies seeking to enhance their unified communications and collaboration strategy, FLX brings exceptional audio performance and flexibility to small- and midsized conference rooms, all at an affordable price.?

Combining wireless operation, high-quality wideband audio, 128-bit encryption, integrated Bluetooth(R), support for analog and IP, and a sub-$1,000 price point, the FLX redefines the conference speakerphone. Unlike the single-component design of previous solutions, Revolabs FLX evolves the conference phone into several distinct components, giving users unprecedented freedom with respect to placement and accessibility of the speaker, microphones, and dial pad.

Available with a variety of compatible Revolabs microphones, the FLX supports a lapel microphone, worn by one person; an omnidirectional tabletop microphone that captures the sound of six to 10 participants; and a directional tabletop microphone that enables audio capture from two to three people. Because the FLX dialer operates like a telephone for handset calls and enables the setup of conference calls, there is no need for a separate desk and conference phone.

The Revolabs FLX can also serve as the audio interface with virtually any major brand of video conferencing equipment, making it the ideal unified communication technology for the small- to medium-sized conference room. The amount of audio equipment in a conference room is reduced, minimizing cost and management overhead. FLX?s integrated Bluetooth technology provides a single collaboration device no matter which communication channel is used, allowing users to connect the speaker and microphones to their Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone or computer.

The Revolabs FLX is available at an MSRP of $999 and sold through major distributors, dealers, and resellers.

I don't often give reviews for games, that's Paul and George's thing, but when I do it's because I really dig it. That's the situation here for Cosmic Jumper by Magiko Gaming (Platformance Castle Pain, Temple Death) which is just a lot of arcade fun.

The game is a platform jumper, of which we have plenty in the Marketplace. But this plays different--more like an arcade game from the 1990's. It has great controls, spiffy graphics and probably the best music you'll ever hear for a game. Going further, the re-playability is quite high and there's even an Xbox 360 Arcade version (under the different title 'Who is God').

Watch the video, try the game. If you like it, it'll set you back a measely $0.99. Get it here in the Marketplace.

WASHINGTON, D.C. President Obama named 13 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) researchers as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). This is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers who are early in their independent research careers. The DOE awardees are being recognized for their efforts in a variety of fields - from research to help our nation achieve energy independence and enhance national security to explorations of the elementary particles in the universe. DOE nominated the awardees and DOE's Office of Science and the National Nuclear Security Administration fund their work.

"It is inspiring to see the innovative work being done by these scientists and engineers as they ramp up their careerscareers that I know will be not only personally rewarding but also invaluable to the Nation," President Obama said. "That so many of them are also devoting time to mentoring and other forms of community service speaks volumes about their potential for leadership, not only as scientists but as model citizens."

"Science and technology are the core of our mission at DOE," said Energy Secretary Steven Chu. "These young scientists are using their talents to help our nation build a brighter future, so I congratulate them on their accomplishments and I look forward to their future achievements."

The winning DOE scientists are among 94 researchers supported by 16 federal departments and agencies who will receive the PECASE award. In addition to a citation and a plaque, each PECASE winner will continue to receive DOE funding for up to five years to advance his or her research. Gaming: The New Daytime Talk Show? : Videogame News ...

Posted by Pascal Tekaia on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 ? Leave a Comment?

Let?s Ask the Stu?dio Audience

Gam?ing is hit?ting new strides every day, not just in the types of tech?nol?ogy avail?able for game devel?op?ers and the kinds of expe?ri?ences being passed on to us gamers, but in the grow?ing accep?tance by the rest of soci?ety. Accep?tance as a pas?time; accep?tance as an art form; accep?tance as a means for edu?cat?ing and com?mu?ni?cat?ing. This is a fact that many of us gamers cel?e?brate often, if not daily. Gam?ing is more pop?u?lar today than it has ever been, with more gam?ing expe?ri?ences read?ily avail?able and more peo?ple than ever who con?sider them?selves ?gamers?.

But this social?iza?tion has come at a price. Whereas argu?ments can be made about young play?ers? imma?tu?rity ruin?ing online gam?ing, or that the casual mar?ket is tak?ing away from the hard?core gamer, for the pur?poses of this arti?cle I want to focus on the shift in the media?s atten?tion that has come with the?increased pub?lic expo?sure of gam?ing. With gam?ing being more in the pub?lic eye, the media is report?ing out?ra?geous sto?ries, cit?ing gam?ing as the cul?prit at every turn. Some?how, gam?ing is being turned into a buzz?word at some sort of giant Kaf?feeklatsch where gos?sip is gospel.

Is this the direc?tion that gam?ing is heading?

Call it rat?ings, call it sweeps, call it bad jour?nal?ism, call it extreme left-wing pol?i?tics or polit?i?cal cor?rect?ness run amok; the sen?sa?tion?al?ist per?spec?tive is mak?ing a con?ve?nient scape?goat out of gam?ing, like it did with film, tele?vi?sion, music, and lit?er?a?ture before. The debate of ?Do vio?lent games pro?duce vio?lent gamers?? has obvi?ously been around for a long, long time. But lately we?re see?ing gam?ing being called into play as the per?pe?tra?tor in vic?tim?less crimes (actu?ally, even the word ?crimes? is mis?lead?ing in these instances, more like ?unfor?tu?nate occur?rences?), and events that wouldn?t nor?mally receive any notice what?so?ever -?that?haven?t caused any harm or peril to any?one -?are now con?nected to gam?ing in dubi?ous ways and pub?li?cized with sup?posed pub?lic out?cries of great dis?may. The fact that, with the inter?net and the right forum, every?one is a pun?dit nowa?days doesn?t help our cause as gamers any. Plenty of ama?teurs love to fuel a con?tro?versy, and hav?ing jour?nal?ists that aren?t impar?tial and haven?t checked their facts speak out against gam?ing is throw?ing addi?tional gaso?line on the prover?bial fire. But enough of the back?ground expo?si?tion and metaphors; let?s get down to brass tacks (couldn?t help myself):

  • Recent high-profile release, Dead Island, received a fair amount of pos?i?tive feed?back upon its recep?tion. It also received much neg?a?tive atten?tion from the media after it was leaked that a user found the orig?i?nal name of a skill of one of the female char?ac?ters from the game. Spot?ted in the game?s orig?i?nal source code, and removed from proper retail ver?sions of the game, the skill had at one point been referred to as ?Fem?i?nist Whore? by a pro?gram?mer at the studio.
  • A young man suf?fered a sud?den and unex?pected death caused by a blood clot form?ing (known as a deep-vein throm?bo?sis) in his leg due to large amounts of time spent sit?ting down, immo?bile. The rea?son? The man was a habit?ual Xbox Live player, spend?ing large amounts of time play?ing Halo?in front of his con?sole. The diag?no?sis? He was ?addicted? to videogames. The head?line? ?Xbox Tragedy?!
  • Surely there?s noth?ing objec?tion?able about Por?tal 2, which is rated ?E? for ?Every?one? here in the States?! Wrong. The crime in ques?tion was an in-game series of jokes made at the protagonist?s expense; jokes about being adopted. As luck would have it, Neil Sta?ples hap?pened to be watch?ing as his 10-year old adopted daugh?ter was play?ing this game. Luck?ily, the tragedy was in large part averted (excuse me, but I can?t help a cer?tain level of deri?sion here) when he rushed to her aid and turned off the offen?sive game. The real crime here? The reporter?s rather unin?formed stance, not to men?tion her faux out?raged tone. The daughter?s reac?tion? Noth?ing!
  • Cer?tainly no stranger to con?tent that pushes the enve?lope, Rockstar?s Grand Theft Auto?series made head?lines due to its Hot Cof?fee Mod ? a sim?u?lated sex scene hid?den in the game?s code (once again!), which couldn?t even be viewed by the game-playing pub?lic. But sure enough, if politi?cians had their say, all copies of San Andreas would have been burnt in the pub?lic square at high?noon.
  • The people?s voice of reason?

Another one of Rockstar?s games, Bully, actu?ally cre?ated a lot of con?tro?versy before it was ever released. In an effort to get the game banned?from the state of Florida, Jack Thomp?son demanded in court to receive an advance copy of the game, which the court ruled he should receive. Thomp?son had pre?vi?ously claimed (with?out any?knowl?edge of the game?s con?tent whatsoever)?that the game was a ?Columbine sim?u?la?tor? (refer?ring to the infa?mous Columbine Mas?sacre). After advance copies were played, the court ruled that the game posed no threat to soci?ety, and was allowed to ship. As a sad end?ing to this story, Thomp?son sub?se?quently turned his atten?tion towards the judge rul?ing against him, and began a cam?paign that ended in Judge Friedman?s disbarment.

Lan?guid Lin?guini, this is offensive?

The list could go on and on, but I think my point has been made. The media, who are sup?posed to be impar?tial and fair, are?quick to jump on any story that holds the poten?tial of sell?ing a pre?dis?posed point-of-view, and this is cur?rently at the expense of gam?ing as a whole. Why offer a ratio?nal, well thought-out argu?ment when a false head?line scream?ing out?rage sells? And yes, I real?ize the con?sumer is once again to blame for this. But there?s a rea?son why there was no national out?rage dur?ing the late ?80s/early ?90s, when two car?i?ca?tured plumbers with fake New York-Italian accents and han?dle?bar porn?staches had their own children?s TV show, quip?ping things like ?Trav?el?ing tomato sauce!?, ?Cracked Cal?zones!?, and other ethnically-charged allit?er?a?tions ? it?s because it was for enter?tain?ment, and nobody gave a?damn!

Every?thing is ?Peo?ple are out?raged? and ?The pub?lic is offended?. Just once, I?d like to meet some?one who was actu?ally an offi?cial part of the ?offended group? over a par?tic?u?lar gam?ing con?tro?versy, or was affected in some way by the things the media keeps telling us we should be upset about. Any?body? Anybody??

Now, I?m not say?ing that the peo?ple in the above exam?ples don?t have a right to express their opin?ions. The par?ents of Chris Stan?i?forth who died of DVT cer?tainly are right to grieve. Neil Sta?ples has every right (oblig?a?tion, even!) in the world to pro?tect his daugh?ter from harm. But what remains is the ques?tion of how to pro?ceed, and what we as gamers should take from these cases. As cit?i?zens, we have the duty to act in an eth?i?cal and respon?si?ble man?ner. We must not blame?the trou?bles that befall us as part of every?day life on the eas?i?est tar?get sim?ply for the sake of plac?ing blame. We must not yell ?Fire!? in a crowded the?ater. And we must not make gam?ing into the scape?goat for our poor health or lack of par?ent?ing. In other words, we need to take respon?si?bil?ity for our own actions and decisions.

Is it Better to Buy or Lease a Car After Bankruptcy? | Financial ...

If you want to get approved at the best possible terms when buying a car, it?s important you know a car lender?s credit guidelines before you apply for credit?especially if you?re bankrupt.

It will save you time and frustration?but more importantly, it will help you avoid credit inquiries that may lower your FICO credit scores up to 12 points per inquiry.

Step 1 in making a lease or buy decision is to determine a lender?s credit guidelines.

You start by asking if they lend to people with a bankruptcy. If so, on what terms?

That?s right. You have to be upfront that you?ve filed bankruptcy. Don?t hide it. We have to face the fact that some dealers just won?t work with people who?ve filed bankruptcy. So our job is to find the ones that do.

Some lenders will only lease to people with a bankruptcy. Others will only offer purchase financing. Yet still others will only lend using a hybrid of the two?this is especially common in Texas.

Ask the finance director at the dealership to direct you as to what structure the manufacturer prefers.

And here?s a quick tip for you: if your bankruptcy doesn?t appear on the credit report your lender pulls?then, in the eyes of the lender, you?re not bankrupt.

The only lenders I would consider using are:

- First choice: Captive lenders (car manufacturers)

- Second choice: Banks (not finance companies)

- Third choice: Credit unions

Ninety-nine percent of the cars I?ve leased over the years have been with captive lenders. Just one was leased by a bank.

That particular deal came from a conversation I had with Amy, the finance manager at the local Land Rover dealership here in Indianapolis. I told her I was open to her financing recommendations, but I preferred financing through the car manufacturer.

I told her my current FICO scores. She immediately said that with my scores she could do better through a local bank. I signed a credit application and told her to go for it.

The next day I signed a lease agreement with that local bank. Being open to her advice literally saved me hundreds of dollars a month on that car.

So be flexible?but be careful. It seems most car dealers call all of their funding sources banks. When in reality some are banks, some are credit unions, and most are sub-prime finance companies.

Here is a list of some of the most commonly used sub-prime auto finance companies:

1. HSBC Automotive

2. Capital One

3. AmeriCredit

You want to pass on the sub-prime finance companies?unless you have exhausted all other options. Sub-prime lenders should be your last resort.

And only use credit unions if they report to all three national credit reporting agencies. How do you find out if a credit union reports to all three credit reporting agencies?

Simple?you ask. Ask the branch manager at the credit union if they report. And after you get the loan, check all three of your credit reports and make sure their trade line appears on each one.

The three worst luxury captive lenders to lease or purchase from after bankruptcy are:

1. BMW

2. Mercedes

3. Porsche

The three worst mainstream captive lenders are:

1. Honda

2. Kia/Subaru

3. Toyota

What makes these the worst?

Once these lenders see that you?ve filed bankruptcy, they are less likely to work with you. However, if they are willing to work with you, they?ll want you to be at least several years from discharge and have perfect credit during that time.

Now that I told you how bad the above six lenders are?there are times where they may offer you good deals. For example, if one of the above happens to be the biggest dealer in your area, they may be able to offer you special deals that a smaller dealer can?t.

Of course, things change all the time with captive auto lenders. They change their credit guidelines on a whim to meet their own financial goals. So, it?s always a good idea to at least research these dealerships?just don?t get your hopes up too high.

OK, so you?ve done your research and narrowed down your choice to one or two car manufacturers.

Step 2 in making a lease or buy decision is to purchase your FICO credit scores.

It?s important you have your most recent scores when you talk to car dealers (just like I did with Amy). It puts you in charge.

When you enter a dealership with your FICO scores, the dealer will know you?re a more informed consumer and cannot be taken advantage of. Just know that the FICO credit scores auto dealers use are a little different than what we see as consumers. The scores the dealers review are called FICO Auto Industry Option Scores. The good news?these FICO scores may be higher than your normal FICO scores if you paid all previous auto loans as agreed.

Some car dealers have told me that if your FICO scores are higher than the scores the dealer reviews?they may even use your scores to get a better deal.

You can buy your scores from myFICO.com.

Step 3 is to interview the remaining car dealers on a deeper level.

Start by asking them these questions:

- Which credit reporting agency do you use to make a lending decision?

- What is your minimum credit score requirement to get approved?

- What credit score is needed to get the best interest rate?

- Do your lenders prefer offering lease or purchase financing to a bankrupt debtor?

- What incentives are there to lease or purchase right now?

At this point it?s important to remain open to either leasing or purchasing. Evaluate your options and incentives. Remember, you?re buying the financing. In other words, the most important factor is the willingness of the lender to loan you money.

I personally view the lease versus buy decision in three ways:

1. If you?re recently recovering from bankruptcy, the only thing that matters is if you can get approved at an interest rate you can afford through a lender that reports to all three national credit reporting agencies. So you should only consider lenders that are bankruptcy friendly.

2. Once your credit scores begin to increase, you can start selecting cars based on which credit reporting agency the lender uses to determine if you qualify. Obviously, you should choose the lender who uses your highest FICO credit score to make a lending decision.

3. When your scores are high enough?or two years have passed after your bankruptcy?or your bankruptcy doesn?t appear on the credit report the lender uses, then you can choose almost any car you like. But make sure you still do your research and use your credit scores to help you compare interest rates, terms and incentives.
