CARBONDALE, IL-- For the first time in five years, the Carbondale football team opened camp without Dan Koester as head coach. In a surprising move last week, Koester resigned citing health and personal reasons. Shortly afterwards, the school named former Du Quoin and SIU standout Nick Hill interim head coach.
"I have been shocked about the whole situation," said Carbondale senior Dominique Johnson. "I didn't see it coming."
"I've been surprised the way it went down,"?admitted senior lineman Kyle Turner. "But we got to move on because the season is right around the corner."
Athletic director Rick Moss says Hill was supposed to be the team's offensive coordinator. But with Hill's resume of playing in the NFL and Arena League, promoting him to the head job was a no brainer.
"He's just a very impressive young man," Moss stated. "And if you're in a situation that we're in right now, if you're looking for someone, a young dynamic coach, we hit it out of the park having someone like Nick around here."
At this point, the Carbondale school board has yet to make a decision on whether or not Hill will be the head coach for the entirety of the season. But it's clear he has nothing but support from his players.
"He's perfect for the job," said senior quarterback Justin Hoffmann. "He's been out here for the past couple months going hard with us, I definitely think he's good for the job."
"It's not just a team for him,"?said senior linebacker Tyrell Robison, with a smile. "It's like a family. So why not give him the whole thing? He's pouring his heart out, so why not?"
Hill could find out Thursday if the Carbondale school board removes the interim tag.
