Dan DeWayne and Christine Myers know what it takes to organize an outdoor music festival with world-class music.? This is their seventeenth year producing the popular California WorldFest, held each summer under the shade of the tall pines at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, located just an hour?s drive from Sacramento.
??????
Known for an eclectic musical offering from around the world, this year?s California WorldFest will take place July 11 ? 14, with four days of music featuring rock super star Bruce Hornsby and Canadian Songwriter Bruce Cockburn, the worldly tunes of Pink Martini and the smoking Brazilian guitar of Badi Assad, plus the jumping dance music of Yemen Blues and Mali?s Vieux Farka Toure.
??????
?We have a cross section of music from all over the world. We really enjoy introducing people to music they may have never heard of,? said DeWayne.
??????
One example of that is Delhi 2 Dublin, a band playing Bhangra, Celtic and Electronica. First introduced to the North State at California WorldFest several years ago, Delhi 2 Dublin returns after much international fanfare, guaranteeing a dancing music meadow during their performance.
??????
In one weekend, festival attendees can expect to hear Israeli folk, Scottish fiddle, Zydeco and Cajun, Americana harmonies, Gypsy violin, Malian desert blues and more.? The Tibetan Monks are also sure to be a hit with opening and closing ceremonies, parades, meditation every morning, the weekend long creation of the sand mandala and ceremonial songs complete with 20-foot long horns.
??????
The multi-lingual, 15 piece band, Pink Martini is sure to be a big draw. Playing WorldFest as part of their tour that includes the Hollywood Bowl, the band has played with many of the finest orchestras and music halls around the world.
??????
Dan was a co-founder of the Strawberry Music Festival in Yosemite and he and Christine founded the Chico World Music Festival.? ?We?ve been involved with the arts for a long time,? said DeWayne, ?and the thrill of bringing music and families together to celebrate is a never ending joy.?
??????
Every year, the family-friendly festival draws crowds of 5,000 daily for music on eight stages, international food, arts and crafts, a Native Peoples? village, music lessons and quality children and teen programs.? Onsite camping is a popular draw for folks who want to slow down, share meals and music together and create long-lasting memories for the whole family.
??????
?More and more people are using WorldFest as a family reunion,? DeWayne said.? One of our favorite things about a festival is all ages can enjoy the fest together, and have their own unique experience.?
??????
DeWayne and Myers are committed to featuring great female artists on the California WorldFest stages,? Believing women represent at least half of the great music in the world, they continue to actively search for exceptional female artists to feature, with DeWayne pointing out Alison Brown, Martha Redbone, Rita Hosking, Briga, and RUNA as examples of great female-driven bands appearing this year.
??????
Young phenom Brittni Paiva will make an encore appearance at WorldFest with her Hawaiian ukulele,? fresh from a blazing impromptu live performance with Carlos Santana that has gone viral.? ?An amazing talent,? said DeWayne.
??????
California WorldFest has become a sought after venue for many musicians. This year, over 1,000 artists contacted DeWayne wanting to play in this summer?s lineup.? A Reno-based lyrical rock band called ?The Novelists? were selected to play at this year?s festival by a new online feature called, Fan?s Choice, giving people the voting power.? ?WorldFest fans are paying attention, listening to the music and voting and we can?t wait to introduce The Novelists to the WorldFest audience,? he said.
??????
World Music is a musical category that encompasses many different styles from around the world, including traditional and neo-traditional music and where cultural traditions intermingle.? Often asked to define World Music, DeWayne says, ?world music is folk music, meaning music played anywhere in the world by folks.? Great music transcends boundaries; when you hear a superb musician you automatically feel it, and that is what we strive for at WorldFest.?

PINK MARTINI featuring Storm Large

Wow and double Wow!! If the United Nations had a house band, there is no question it would be the 12-member strong Pink Martini. Led by piano virtuoso Thomas Lauderdale, these musical diplomats of our time lead us on a fanciful romp to a samba parade in Rio, a 1930s French cabaret, a side journey to Japan and a roaring rhythmic tribute to South America, all part of a rollicking around the world musical adventure. Guaranteed to be a WorldFest highlight like Music Meadow has never seen! And, we could not be happier. SATURDAY

"I always hoped we could find a way to collaborate. She is a brilliant, beautiful, charismatic and seductive star who would give Jayne Mansfield a run for her money. While we are disappointed that China is unable to perform with us full-time, I am delighted be able to introduce Storm Large to audiences."? - Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini

Featuring 10-12 musicians, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Australia, New Zealand, South ************************

BRUCE HORNSBY

Singer, pianist, accordion player, songwriter extraordinaire, Bruce has done it all from rock n roll to jazz to bluegrass, and collaborated with Dylan, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Grateful Dead, and Bonnie Raitt among many more. Multi-Grammy winner, lauded as New Artist of the Year, and forever true to writing songs that resonate across musical boundaries, Bruce and the stellar Noisemakers promise to make Music Meadow Music Heaven . . . we can't wait! FRIDAY

Bruce Hornsby has built one of the most diverse, collaborative and adventurous careers in contemporary music. Drawing from a vast wellspring of American musical traditions, the singer/pianist/composer/bandleader has created a large and accomplished body of work and employed a vast array of stylistic approaches. Throughout this period, Hornsby has maintained the integrity, virtuosity and artistic curiosity that have been hallmarks of his work from the start.

The 13-time Grammy nominee?s commercial stock soared early on when ?The Way It Is? ? the title track of Bruce Hornsby and the Range?s 1986 debut album ? became the most-played song on American radio in 1987 and won ASCAP?s Song of the Year award. ?The Way It Is? and hits like ?Mandolin Rain? and ?Every Little Kiss? established Hornsby as a popular musician, while subsequent high-profile work with the likes of Don Henley, Willie Nelson, Charlie Haden and Bonnie Raitt made him an in-demand collaborator.

Though a talented and instantly identifiable singer, bandleader and pianist, Hornsby is a songwriter at heart. He is committed to portraying his songs in new ways that allow them to evolve and expand. This approach was further developed during his time spent playing over one hundred shows with The Grateful Dead between 1990 and 1995. Hornsby admired the Dead?s vibrant tradition of loosely blending folk, blues and improvisation found a kindred spirit in the Dead, with their vibrant tradition of loosely blending folk, jazz, blues and improvisation.
