THE 108th staging of a horticultural show today (Saturday) promises to be a 'great day out for the whole family'.

The Royal Windsor Rose and Horticultural Society (RWHRS), of which The Queen is a patron, is hosting its summer show in the prestigious setting of the grounds of St George's School, in Windsor Castle, from 11am.

More than 100 classes of competition feature in the show's programme covering roses, flowers, floral design, home economics, crafts and photography, which are open to people of all ages and abilities.

Andrew Try, chairman of the organising committee, said: "Building on the success of last year's show, this year will be even more focused on providing a great day out for the family with lots of entertainment and over a hundred classes to be entered for everyone from five years old to the professional grower."

The show, supported by Berkshire Media Group, The Observer's parent company, will offer more than just horticulture and crafts with a packed line-up of entertainment for the whole family including bird of prey displays, a petting zoo and beekeeping lessons.

There will also be home-brewing demonstrations, a beer tent sponsored by The Windsor and Eton Brewery and home-made ice cream.

Last year's Royal guests were Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, who officially opened the show.

Celebrity guests included actors Rhys Ifans and Anna Friel and rugby legend Zinzan Brooke.

Prizes will be presented at the show by constable and governor of Windsor Castle Air Marshal Ian Macfadyen CB OBE - president of the show.

Tickets cost 4 per person or 10 for a family of four.

Annual membership of the RWRHS is 6 for an individual and 10 joint. It ensures invitations to all of the society's events as well as being granted access to the members' enclosure at the July show.
