LBSU downed by Washington State

The Long Beach State baseball team played its first game at Blair Field in nearly two weeks resulted in an 11-1 loss at the hands of Washington State University.

The Dirtbags (8-15) allowed 15 hits and committed five errors in their 10-run loss Monday to the Cougars.?

Freshman starting pitcher Nick Sabo was tagged for four runs on six hits in 3 and 2/3 innings pitched.

After a couple solid performances against Wichita State, the LBSU bullpen didn?t fare too well against the Cougars.

Freshman reliever Edgar Gomez gave up three runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Sophomore Jake Stassi allowed three runs in two innings, while sophomore Josh Frye surrendered one run in two innings while striking out four.

Washington State got out to a fast start as Jason Monda doubled to start the game in the top of the first inning. A single from Tyler Richards scored Monda. A Derek Jones single scored Richards. Adam Nelubowich then singled in Jones, and Patrick Claussen doubled in Nelubowich to give the Cougars an early 4-0 advantage.

The Dirtbags were able to keep Washington State quiet until the fifth when the Cougars added three more runs behind a two-run double from Ian Sagdal.

The Cougars added two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and one in the eighth to seal the victory.

The Dirtbags finished the game with six hits led by freshman right fielder Richard Pritagano who went 1-for-3 with the lone RBI for LBSU. Sophomore second baseman Jeff McNeil also went 1-for-3, scoring the only Dirtbag run.

LBSU heads back on the road for another Big West Conference series beginning Friday against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. ?
