"For over 50 years I never had sex with a male. It wasn?t repressed"
Clive Davis, the man responsible for launching and guiding the music careers of some of the most beloved performers of our time ? most notably Janis Joplin, Santana, Whitney Houston and others, is releasing a memoir of his incredible life titled The Soundtrack of My Life. As he promotes the release of his book, Davis is sitting down for interviews to talk about the revelations he makes in this memoir ? and has revealed for the first time publicly that he has enjoyed relationships with both women and men. It?s fairly common knowledge that Clive Davis was married twice to two different women but we are learning today that he has also enjoyed romantic relationships with men as well. So cool!!
Clive Davis? new memoir, The Soundtrack of My Life, is full of inside stories from throughout his famed career. But the biggest revelation is a personal one: For the first time, the 80-year-old record executive discusses his ?bisexual life.? Davis, who has been married and divorced twice, has never before publically addressed his sexuality. In a candid five-page section toward the end of the book, due in stores today, he writes that he first had a sexual encounter with a man during ?the era of Studio 54.? ?On this night, after imbibing enough alcohol, I was open to responding to his sexual overtures,? writes Davis, who says he had only been with women before. Being with a man, he writes, provided ?welcome relief.? After a period of ?soul searching and self-analysis,? Davis separated from his second wife in 1985, and says that he went on to have simultaneous relationships with two women and a man. In 1990, he entered into a ?monogamous relationship? with a male doctor, who is not named in the book. Although that relationship ended in 2004, Davis says he has been in a subsequent relationship with another man ever since. Davis writes that his coming out deeply affected his ties with one of his sons, Mitchell: After what Davis calls ?one very trying year,? father and son worked out their differences, Davis says.
Naturally, the bulk of Clive Davis?s book centers on his professional career (he talks about the Milli Vanilli lip-syncing controversy from the 90?s, his feud with Kelly Clarkson and more) but, naturally, it?s his coming out that is getting all of the attention today. Last night, Clive sat down to discuss the matter on Nightline:
there are deeply personal revelations: The end of his two marriages, and in the final chapter, Davis discusses his sexuality. He is bisexual, he told me. Since the end of his second marriage in 1985, he has been sexually involved with men. At first with both men and women, Davis said, but for the past 20 years with two male partners: A doctor for 13 years and for the past seven, with another man he does not name.
He tells me bisexuality is ?maligned and misunderstood? but that it is his truth and he decided it was time for him to say so publicly. I asked Davis about the old adage that people are ?either gay, straight or lying.? ?I?m not lying,? Davis said. ?[Bisexuality] does exist. For over 50 years I never had sex with a male. It wasn?t repressed. I had very good sexual relationships with women.? When pressed about why he doesn?t name the men he has had relationships with, he said it is their privacy he is protecting, not his own.
It?s always so incredible to me to see people come out like this. I can assure you, coming out is no easy task ? whether you?re a teen or someone of advanced age, coming out as gay or bisexual can be a very harrowing experience. It?s clear that Clive was ready to tell his story and I?m so happy that he feels comfortable enough with himself to do so in this very public way. The man has lived a very storied, very successful life. I?m insanely fascinated by it all. I must admit, I?m surprised by Clive?s revelation only because I?ve never really thought of the man in sexual terms. But as I said, I?m so happy that he is sharing this part of his life with the world. I wish him all the love and happiness in the world, no matter who he chooses to share his romantic life with :D
