In this case, we know that Bob Baffert is going to bring Paynter to this race, which becomes quite interesting, knowing that he didn?t run this colt in either of the first two Triple Crown races. And, we also have to remember that Bodemeister ? clearly the best three-year horse that Baffert is training at the moment ? has already been bested by I?ll Have Another twice in these Triple Crown races; he didn?t bother bringing Bodemeister here to Belmont Park.
Immediately, that?s one strike against Paynter in our eyes. However, when you look at the Belmont Stakes gambling lines, you have to like that the only two races that this horse has run off of the synthetic track at Santa Anita, he has won by 5 ? lengths and lost out by a length and a half. In both runs though, this colt had Beyer Speed Ratings of 100 and 106, and he is the only horse in this field that has posted a speed rating this high.
We definitely question the lack of races Paynter has run in his career. When the Belmont Stakes wagering lines come off the board on Saturday, this will be just the fifth race in his brief career. He didn?t run as a two-year old at all, and the only time that he ran in a G1 race was at the Santa Anita Derby in April, a race in which he had no shot of beating I?ll Have Another.
The other thing that we will say to Baffert?s credit is that he is bringing a hot horse to this track. Paynter has run four times since February, and he is getting better and better with every race. He will be the speed in this race in all likelihood, and though it is hard to go wire-to-wire, if there is a colt to do it, this is it.
Belmont Stakes Lines Prediction ? We really just don?t like horses that don?t possess many big time races under their belts. Paynter tried his best against the big boys at Santa Anita three races ago, and he really didn?t run all that well and never looked comfortable at 1 1/8 miles. How can we expect him to all of a sudden be a contender at a whopping 1 ? miles? There are better horses to back than Paynter on Saturday for sure.
