COMMENTARY | Sharon Bialek, the latest Herman Cain accuser to allege inappropriate sexual behavior on the part of the GOP candidate, looked to Gloria Allred for support when coming forward. I see Allred's involvement as a sign that Cain's goose is cooked. It's worked before.
Allred's news conference was overshadowed by the Conrad Murray verdict. Nevertheless, Radar Online details Bialek's account of what is not just sexual harassment but sounds more like an allegation of sexual assault -- in spite of Allred's weak attempt at humor when referring to the incident as Cain's "idea of a stimulus package."
As a California voter, I know Allred has a track record of derailing conservative candidates running for office. Case in point is Meg Whitman, who spent a lot of money in her failed gubernatorial run against Jerry Brown.
How could I not remember the tearful Nicky Diaz, an illegal immigrant who had been employed in the Whitman household? She alleged Whitman was fully aware of her illegal immigration status but nevertheless employed her -- all the while spouting the Republican Party line about going after employers who hire those unauthorized to work in the U.S. Whitman's goose was cooked after this debacle.
Leave it to the San Francisco Chronicle to dig up information that Oakland-based California Nurses Association, one of the left-wing unions that have a stranglehold on California politics, brought together Allred and Diaz. The damage was done.
The Electorate (and I) Wait
As one of the independent voters who have been taking a closer look at Cain, I cannot help but wonder at the amateurish way with which he has been handling his accusers. Now that Allred upped the ante -- who knows on whose behest? -- will the candidate finally present some facts and documents to prove his innocence?
He cannot prove a negative, and the accusations of Bialek cannot be legally disproven short of her recanting. Still, Cain has overall failed to take the bull by the horns and prove that other allegations are untrue.
I believe that Allred may very well add another notch to her belt.
