Horse Terminology

For readers who are not horse people here are some common terms used frequently in articles, blogs and websites about horses. These are only brief statements, each could easily have a whole article for a more in depth.

Stallion ? An adult male horse intact.

Mare ? A female horse ? a term usually used for 3 years or more.

Broodmare ? A mare used for breeding.

Gelding ? A maleHorse that has been neutered. (This is used by most drivers because of the missing hormones.)

Colt ? A young man horse, usually 2 years or younger, and usually still intact.

Filly ? A young horse, usually 2 years or younger.

Foal ? A baby horse is still nursing (in his / her part Dam).

Dam ? Mother of a horse.

Sire ? A horseFather.

Weaned ? A baby horse is no longer beside her Dam (nurses) and less than 1 year.

Yearling ? A horse that is 1 year (this is usually counted from 1 January of the year following their birth does not matter when was the current date).

Young horses are often given as two or three years-olds, but after just one stallion, mare or gelding, and as an adultHorse.

Gaits ? the walk of a horse. Warm-blooded animals have three ? foot (4 beats), trot (two copies) and canter (3 strokes).

Hot blood ? this is a term used to a horse that describe one of the many horse breeds from different regions and countries around the world that their own policies, have the race is. There are tests of increasing difficulty for the horse and rider that are patterns ridden in a rectangular arena. This is also an Olympic sport and the part that is ridden music (known as freestyle) is the most popular among viewers.

Cross Country ? this sport is like the fox hunting without the fox and the rest of the pack. The course is out and jumps and obstacles are natural and solid. This sport requires a brave horse and rider and is the most dangerous for both.

Complete ? a combination of show jumping, dressage and cross country. Horsesin this sport you have to be very athletic and versatile.

Sport Horse ? a horse that is suitable for the Olympic disciplines of dressage, show jumping and eventing, and hunters.
