Curiosity Quills Interviews Daniele Lanzarotta | Curiosity Quills

Last week we sat down (virtually) with Daniele Lanzarotta, author of multiple YA paranormal novels,?including the Imprinted Souls Series and Academy of the Fallen.

Not one to toss her (or other peoples?) manuscripts to the wind and see where they land, Dani is taking the bull by the horns, so to speak, as marketing director of the publishing house?Rocket Science Productions. Not surprising, considering her academic background in business and finance.

She enjoys reading and writing young adult novels with just about any sort of paranormal or supernatural bent ? vampires, ghosts, angels, and more! She also enjoys watching hockey, playing rock band, guitar hero and spending time with the family.

In other words, our kinda gal.

CQ:?Tell us a little about yourself and how you came to be writing paranormal fiction??

DL: My name is Daniele Lanzarotta, author of Academy of the Fallen and the Imprinted Souls Series. ?I love reading YA novels just as much as I love writing them! ?I was lured into the paranormal fiction world by vampire books and movies, but I really enjoy most types of paranormal? ghosts, fallen angels, warlocks, etc.

CQ: You started your writing career while in school. Did your choice of major (business & finance) offer any advantages to your books? success? What are the most important lessons you?ve learned??

DL: My major does have its benefits as far as managing the business side of having books published. ?I also have a MBA with focus in marketing which helps a great deal. ?As far as my writing goes, I benefit a lot from critical thinking classes that I had to take at the beginning. ?It really helps me with character development and consistency in the storyline.

CQ: In the current publishing climate, a writer ? whether legacy or self-published ? needs to be a marketer as much as scribbler. How have you been approaching the marketing of your Imprinted Souls and Academy of the Fallen series?

DL: I heard someone say that once you are a published author, you no longer have time to write. ?That is true to some extent. ?You just have to put time aside to write because marketing does take up a lot of time. ?I enjoy being able to interact with readers, so that is a major part of how I?ve been approaching the marketing of my books? facebook, twitter, blogging, chats?

CQ: Do you feel that the paranormal YA genre is only beginning to awaken, or is it starting to peak? How do you differentiate yourself from the throngs of competing paranormal authors?

DL: I personally believe that the paranormal YA genre has been awaken for a while, but just recently has been getting the attention that it deserves. ?The YA paranormal genre has also been more and more diversified?. from focusing on vampires, to fallen angels, warlocks, shape-shifters? There is something for everyone, and most authors seem to have something new to offer. ?In Imprinted Souls, you meet a vampire who was a fallen angel when she was turned. ?In Academy of the Fallen, the concept of fallen angels and their purpose is also very unique.

CQ: I understand you participated in fan-fiction before your success as a published author. How do you feel about fan-fiction?s place in the literary world? Should authors be wary, embrace it, or do something altogether different to leverage the fandoms? user base? Which fandom did you write for, and can we have a peek??

DL: * laughs * ?You really did your research! ?I really only wrote one fan-fiction, well? half of one really, before I started craving my own characters and my own stories. ?It just didn?t feel right using someone else?s characters. ??There are some really good fan-fictions out there, and some not so great. ?The way I see it, if that inspires someone?s creativity and desire to write, why not? ?I?m not sure about taking a peek? *laughs * ?It was so long ago, and I haven?t looked back at it, but it probably needs a great deal of editing!?

CQ: If there?s one fandom that?s as close to ubiquitous as can be these days, it?s Harry Potter. What are your thoughts on Pottermore.com and J.K. Rowling?s plans for an exclusive electronic distribution of her novels, not to mention her recent breakup with the agency that got her where she is today?

DL: Honestly, I haven?t read the Harry Potter books yet, although I do plan on reading them. ?I also just recently watched the first movie. ?I don?t feel like I know enough about the situation to comment on it, but I would assume J.K. Rowling knows what is best for herself.

CQ: Vampires, wizards, werewolves, fairies, Greek gods, and man-eating unicorns. Been there, done that, got a bookshelf-full. What?s the next paranormal critter-du-jour, in your opinion? What would you want to actually see emerge, if you could pick and choose??

DL: I believe that Fallen Angels are coming out more and more, but for some reason I want to read more and possibly write about warlocks.?

CQ: Tell us about Rocket Science Productions. What was your experience like getting published through them, not to mention becoming their marketing director?

DL: I did so much research before getting published, and Rocket Science Productions was definitely the right decision for me. ?I was really concerned about how much saying the publisher would have over book titles, character names, book covers, etc? yes, I wanted a say on everything and I got it. ?After my second book was published, I got the job as a marketing director, and I just love my job. ?It is great to be a part of making other author?s works come to life.?

CQ: Speaking of publishers, what in your opinion is the best way for new writers to go about getting their name out there, and books in the hands of readers? Do you feel the path of self-publishing offers more benefits, or is traditional publishing still the way to go if you?re lucky enough to get noticed? Would you say the smaller indie publishers are the ?golden middle? in terms of flexibility and support??

DL: Different things will work for different people and you will have to know what is best for you and your goals, but I can?t imagine getting my books published any other way than through the ?golden middle?. ?I feel it is important to have a publishing company to back you up. ?Publishing companies have the ?know-how? and that is essential. There are benefits to all options, but the ?golden middle?, in my opinion, has the best of all worlds.?

CQ: Can you tell us what?s in the oven right now? What inspired this project? Is there something you plan to do differently this time around, when it comes to promoting it?

DL: I just started working on Nephilim, which is the second book in the Academy of the Fallen series, and after that, I will be working on Shattered Souls, which is the last in the Imprinted Souls Series. ?As far as promoting it, I do hope to focus more on blog tours. ?They are so much fun!
