Allen caps college career with bowl win; NFL next?

Antonio Allen recorded a team-high seven tackles, including a sack, to lead No. 9 South Carolina to a 30-13 win over 20th-ranked Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando.

The Trinity Catholic High School graduate led the Gamecocks with 88 tackles on the year, helping the school to its first 11-win season in history. The senior defender added 9? tackles for loss, three interceptions, four forced fumbles, seven pass defenses and scored a pair of touchdowns.

Allen, who was a second-team All-America selection at safety this season, is expected to be drafted in the NFL later this year.

TERRENCE BROOKS: Former Dunnellon High standout?s interception in the end zone sealed the victory for Florida State in an 18-14 win over Notre Dame in the Champs Sports Bowl last week in Orlando.

The sophomore defensive back added a tackle in the Seminoles? ninth win of the season. He finished the year with 17 tackles, 11 pass defenses and a quarterback hurry for the 9-4 ?Noles.

JOHN BRANTLEY: Former Celtic made his final start at quarterback for Florida in the Gators? 24-17 victory over Ohio State in Monday?s Gator Bowl.

The fifth-year senior was 12 of 16 passing for 132 yards and a touchdown in the win. He finished the season completing 60-percent of his passes for 2,044 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Another Trinity alum, Chris Johnson, played special teams in the Gator Bowl, but did not register any statistics. The true freshman finished with eight tackles on the season.

ALBERT GARY: North Marion High graduate caught a pair of passes for 20 yards in Iowa State?s 27-13 loss to Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl last week.

The sophomore receiver added a pair of tackles for the Cyclones, who ended the season at 6-7. Gary finished with 23 catches for 287 yards and two touchdowns.

FREDDIE RILEY: Vanguard High graduate knocked down four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points as the University of Massachusetts defeated Central Connecticut, 97-65, last week.

The 6-foot-5 guard added three rebounds, three assists and a steal in the victory. The junior ranks third on the team in scoring with 9.1 points a game and has converted the most 3-pointers (30) on the team.

UMass (11-3) hosts Fordham on Thursday.

MATT SAUEY: Trinity product was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor and blocked four shots for North Florida in an 83-53 loss to Belmont on Monday.

The 6-foot-7 forward scored seven points with four rebounds, an assist and a steal in the loss. The senior is averaging 5.2 points and 3.3 rebounds with a team-high 21 blocks this season for the 7-8 Ospreys.

ANGEL GONZALEZ: Former Meadowbrook Academy standout is averaging four points a game for the St. Leo University basketball team.

The true freshman guard leads the team in 3-point shooting at 60 percent, making 3-of-5 from behind the arc, and is a perfect 1-for-1 from the free throw line. Gonzalez is averaging more than nine minutes of playing time per game for the 6-5 Lions.

BRIAUNA HAGINS: Former Vanguard basketball standout was named to the Rollins Holiday Classic?s All-Tournament Team last week after averaging eight points and a dozen rebounds a game for Florida Tech.

The senior power forward delivered a game-high 13 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass, in the Panthers? 74-71 victory over Cedarville in the tournament finale. Hagins is averaging a double-double with 10.1 points and 11.6 boards a game for the 9-3 Panthers, who play at Nova Southeastern today.

JESSICA NEGRON: Former West Port golf star had another stellar showing for the Florida State Seminoles during the fall golf season.

The junior, who is coming off a 45th-place finish at the NCAA Division I Championships, averaged a 76.6 score in the fall. Negron, who is coached by Vanguard High graduate Amy Bond, fired a 2-under 70 in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla. in mid-October, tying her for the best round of any Seminole golfer this fall.

The ?Noles will pick up the spring season Feb. 13 with a trip to Palos Verdes, Cal., for the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge.
